Story

We are cycling from London to Amsterdam to raise money for Parkinson's causes.

We are two families who have lived with the effects of Parkinson’s.

Peter Jackson /Dad /Papa left us on the 12 October 2021. He was a dedicated husband, father and grandfather whose steady presence is missed more than words can say. Peter’s eight years with Parkinson’s were a constantly shifting experience and the onset of dementia in his final years had a particularly acute effect on his quality of life.

Mirren (his wife), JJ, Freddie, George (stepsons), John (father of the boys) and Ben (friend) are cycling in his memory to raise money to help others to fight against an illness that affected Peter so much in his final years.

Nick Mostyn/Dadda was diagnosed with Parkinson’s in June 2020, and so is in the early stages of the Parkinson’s journey. His condition is presently being well-managed by the team at KCH. Nick’s children, Henry, Daisy, Gregory and Charlie, and Gregory’s girlfriend Ella, are cycling to raise money for two of his favoured Parkinson’s causes. Nick will also be doing the ride, albeit on an electric bicycle!

We are raising money for two Parkinson’s related causes: PDNMG & Cure Parkinson’s. On this page we hope to raise £30,000 for PDNMG. Click here to go to our page for Cure Parkinson’s

PDNMG

If someone mentioned Parkinson’s Disease to you, you would probably think of the “shaking palsy” described in 1817 by Dr James Parkinson. But research has now established that Parkinson’s is much more than a movement disorder. It typically afflicts its sufferers with non-motor symptoms, sometimes of a seriously debilitating nature. The non-motor symptoms may include physical impairments such as speech defects; but, additionally, they encompass psychological harm including depression, sleep disorder, hallucinations and even dementia.

While there have been enormous advances in the management of the motor symptoms of Parkinson’s in the last 30 years, the non-motor symptoms of Parkinson’s (NMS) have remained relatively unexplored.

The Parkinson’s Disease Non-Motor Group (PDNMG) is a non-profit international multidisciplinary educational group set up by Professor K Ray Chaudhuri. The group brings together neurologists, geriatricians, psychologists, sleep experts, nurse specialists, cognitive experts and patient group representatives. It has developed new concepts in the way Parkinson’s, and its different non-motor subtypes, is recognised. It has developed bespoke personalised treatment for NMS problems such as pain, sleep dysfunction, bowel disorders and anxiety.

PDNMG cannot undertake its research, and it cannot organise symposia and other educational initiatives, without funds. Any contribution will be most gratefully received. We are convinced that NMS can be successfully contained, and ultimately conquered, but we need the funds to do so.
