Story
Why, what, where, when?
[Actually, this is for my Dad, 'the Italian vicar'! He's off again! Early in 2023 he did a sponsored walk to raise money for a disabled toilet in the Anglican church in Milan. Now, he has been appointed chaplain to the Church of the Holy Ghost, in Genoa. ]
Why? In late September they had to have a tree removed from the garden of the Church of the Holy Ghost, Genoa. A branch had broken off and damaged a car, and it was only a matter of time before another branch came down onto the busy supermarket carpark in front of the church, possibly injuring a passer-by. Unfortunately, the cost of removing the tree, £3,030 (3,500 euro) has also done considerable damage to the church's limited finances.
What? We are hoping to raise money to cover the costs of felling the tree. A magnolia will be planted in its place. It is good to be able to see the church again, and we would like to restore the garden. We aim to recoup the cost of the tree felling by a sponsored walk around the forts of Genoa...
Where? So Genoa, once the great rival of Venice for control of the Mediterranean, is ringed by a series of 16 forts atop the mountains behind the city. A route between then covers about 30 km, but with many ups and downs. Part of the idea of walking the circle of the forts is to create a circle of prayer around the city of Genoa, to bless both its inhabitants and the Anglican chaplaincy there.
When? The walk will be carried out over two day during Advent (i.e. in December). The dates will depend upon weather forecasts as well as my Dad's availability.
