Story
This summer we are travelling to Honduras and staying on the island of Roatan. As part of our stay we would like to give something back the local community. After reading and researching about volunteering in the area it became apparent that the schools of Roatan, like many schools in Honduras, are underfunded. As a result we would like to fundraise and then use this money to buy supplies for the local schools. We will then take these supplies with us in the summer.
Hondurus is one of the poorest countries in the western hemisphere. Education is something that we take for granted in the UK however thousands if children do not attend school in Roatan, Honduras. We are aiming to raise funds for a) classroom supplies, such as colouring pencils, rulers, glue and scissors, b) school uniform essentials and c) sports equipment, footballs and volleyballs . Money raised will be used to buy much needed 'wishlist' items and then these supplies will be donated to support the Children's Fund in Roatan who work with many different schools across the island of Roatan in Honduras.
Many schools on Roatan have a 'wishlist' of basic education supplies, these include such items as colouring books, rulers, calculators, notebooks and glue. The 'basics' of most UK schools are greatly needed in Roatan's schools, what we take for granted will be greatly received by the local Children's Fund.
Honduran Law mandates that all children wear uniforms to school. Many families cannot afford uniforms and therefore their children cannot attend school. It is estimated that as many as 3,000 children on Roatan do NOT attend school. Please help us change this. We aim to use some of the raised money to buy classroom supplies and then some to buy school uniform.
Finally, we have found out that if the schools have balls for the kids to play with then they will stay in school longer and keeps them occupied after school. Especially the boys attend school longer because they can come to school and play football with their friends before class and during recess.
Thank you very much for any donation you are able to give,
Gemma and Poppy
