La pandemia di Covid-19 che da inizio anno ha interessato ogni angolo del globo ci ha insegnato cosa vuol dire la perdita di libertà. La libertà di andare a lavoro, di andare ad un concerto o ad un evento, ma soprattutto la libertà di abbracciare e baciare i nostri cari che da tanto non vediamo più.

Questa misteriosa malattia ha irrimediabilmente cambiato gli equilibri delle nostre società e in maniera violenta e inarrestabile, della nostra vita quotidiana. Improvvisamente tutti ci rendiamo conto di cosa voglia dire non poter operare una libera scelta nelle nostre azioni quotidiane. Questa situazione di disagio globale dovrebbe aiutarci a capire chi, con una quotidianità di questo tipo, ci convive da sempre combattendo una guerra acerrima contro un nemico sconosciuto.

È il caso per esempio di chi è affetto da Fibrosi Cistica, la più diffusa tra le malattie genetiche che colpisce vari organi - soprattutto l’apparato respiratorio e digerente - costringendo chi ne è affetto a rinunciare a parte della propria libertà.

Ad oggi, sono circa 100.000 le persone nel mondo a combattere questa guerra la cui vittoria risiede nella sola speranza di trovare una cura. In attesa di una terapia che sia in grado di guarire la malattia, la vita dei pazienti con Fibrosi Cistica e delle loro famiglie è segnata da decenni dall'isolamento obbligato del paziente da potenziali contagi, in casa, a scuola, nella vita sociale per prevenire infezioni virali e batteriche. Indossare la mascherina quando si è con gli altri, mantenere le distanze di sicurezza, non frequentare soggetti infettati da virus o da germi multi-resistenti, comunicare attraverso video, social, per loro è la regola da sempre.

La mia cara amica Rosa è una delle persone che purtroppo non è riuscita a vincere la sua battaglia andandosene via nel Febbraio del 2017 e lasciando un vuoto enorme, incolmabile, nelle vite di chiunque l’abbia conosciuta. Rosa ha usato la sua vita per fare la differenza e aiutare, attraverso il suo lavoro di psicoterapeuta, e non solo, tantissime persone. Rosa era bellissima, generosa, sensibile e di un’energia positiva che è difficile raccontare. La sua risata era contagiosa e la sua vivacità ineguagliabile.

Anche dopo la sua scomparsa Rosa ha continuato a fare la differenza, attraverso mille iniziative di solidarietà organizzate da sua sorella Teresa che, allo scopo di far conoscere questa malattia e raccogliere fondi a sostenere la ricerca, ha creato il progetto HOPE il cui acronimo Helping Other People Eternally, vuol dire "Aiutando altre persone a vivere eternamente".

Trovare una cura è l’unica speranza per restituire la libertà nella vita di chi non l’ha mai avuta.

Dal 2017 ogni estate a fine Luglio in concomitanza con il compleanno di Rosa, ho corso una mezza maratona per raccogliere fondi e contribuire alla ricerca e, con il vostro generoso supporto, finora abbiamo raccolto circa 2500 sterline interamente devolute alla Fondazione Italiana Fibrosi Cistica. Quest’anno non ci sarà una mezza maratona ma vi chiedo di nuovo di unirvi a me ed aiutarmi a celebrare la mia amica Rosa attraverso la raccolta di nuovi fondi.

Ogni piccola donazione farà la differenza per trovare finalmente una cura.

The Covid-19 pandemic that has affected every country on the globe since the beginning of the year, has taught us what loss of freedom means. The freedom to go to work, to go to a concert or to an event but, above all, the freedom to embrace and kiss our loved ones whom we have not seen for a long time.

This mysterious disease has irreparably changed the dynamics of our societies and, in an intense and unstoppable way, of our daily life. Suddenly we all realise what it means to not be able to make a free choice in our daily actions.

This situation of global unease should help us understand who, with a daily life of this type, has always fought a bitter war against an unknown enemy. This is the case, for example, of those affected by Cystic Fibrosis, the most common of the genetic diseases affecting various organs - especially the respiratory and digestive systems - forcing those affected to give up part of their freedom.

To date, about 100,000 people in the world are fighting this war whose victory lies in the mere hope of finding a cure. Waiting for a therapy that can heal the disease, the life of Cystic Fibrosis patients and their families has been marked for decades by the forced isolation of the patient from potential infections, at home, at school, in social life to prevent viral and bacterial infections. Wearing the mask when you are with others, keeping a safe distance, not attending subjects infected with viruses or multi-resistant germs, communicating through videos, social networks, has always been the rule for them.

My dear friend Rosa is one of the people who unfortunately failed to win her war against this illness in February 2017 and leaving a huge, unbridgeable void in the lives of anyone who knew her. Rosa was beautiful, generous, sensitive and with a positive energy that is difficult to convey.

Rosa has continued to make a difference even after her death through many solidarity events organised by her sister Teresa who, in order to raise awareness about this disease and raise funds to support research, created the HOPE project whose acronym means "Helping other people eternally".

Finding a cure is the only hope to restore freedom in the life of those who have never had it. From 2017 every summer around the end of July to coincide with Rosa's birthday, I have run a half marathon to raise funds and contribute to research and, with your generous support, so far we have collected around 2500 pounds entirely donated to the Italian Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. This year there will be no half marathon but I ask you again to join me and help me celebrate my friend Rosa by raising new funds.
