    Story

Phoenix Radio has been broadcasting to the local community for nearly 10 years working with schools, using radio technology and the community broadcast to build confidence and communication skills. We also work with young people in Foster care or leaving care to put their voices across using radio as well as using visual art. Phoenix gives placement or volunteering opportunities to people with Parkinson’s Disease and in so doing addresses depression. One of our 85 volunteer presenters had throat cancer and has broadcast with us regularly for 7 years. Again, this has benefited him on many levels. Others have physical disability, visual impairment or bipolar disorder. Again, we work with people who are hearing impaired or visually impaired which helps us learn new skills as an organisation to offer more services to people with additional needs. In the past we have been able to find grants to support this work but more recently it has been harder to find funding but because people have felt the benefit of the work we do we have not stopped even though, much of the work we do is given for free but has proved priceless to many individuals. For as long as we can, we will keep going for people in our community but it has meant that paid staff have left or cut down their wages. There are 85 volunteers who keep the station running but at the moment we are not able to pay the rent and other overheads and although there are possibilities of funding in the future we are at risk of closing down this unique community service and with it the opportunities we give to people. We have been able to estimate approximately 80,000 listeners per month. So with £80,000 needed to run, in an ideal world £1 from each listener would keep us going. On that principle. 1000 people contributing £80, 500 people contributing £160 each, 400 people contributing £200 each would help us to keep, not only broadcasting, but going out to develop outreach projects around the area.

Really hoping you achieve the target. Phoenix is a FANTASTIC station & does such great work. It would be deeply disappointing for it to end- both for the listeners & people you give opportunities to.
