Story

Welcome to Nothing To Declare, a brand new theatre company, showcasing young emerging theatre makers from across Greater Manchester.

Nothing To Declare exists to create theatre with a cause. Theatre is a powerful medium for inspiring and celebrating social change within communities and in light on the centenary year for women's rights we're dead excited to present to you...

How The Vote Was Won + Beyond

A rare staging of the original suffragette play How The Vote Was Won by Cicely Hamilton (The March of the Women) and Christopher St John, followed by three short 10 minute pieces of new writing in response to it.

Set in the living room of Horace and Ethel Cole, on the day of a general women’s strike called by Suffragettes after the Government declares women don't need votes as they are all looked after by men. All the women who have previously supported themselves agree to leave their jobs and homes and instead insist on support from their nearest male relative. As Horace’s female relatives arrive at his house one after the other, he comes to realise something must be done and rushes to Parliament, along with the other men in London, to demand ‘Votes for Women’ as soon as possible.

The aim is to reflect on the ‘then and now’ of feminism and women’s rights, and how people today might help further women’s rights in a creative and progressive way.

Suffragette plays are unapologetic propaganda pieces, written with passion and inspired by frustration. They were a protest then. Now they can be a reminder, a celebration and an inspiration.

We're delighted to be bringing this piece of suffragette history to life within the People's History Museum in Manchester as their wonderful suffragette exhibitions inhabit the space.

But in order to do this play and the new pieces of writing proper justice we need your help. In order for this play to take place we're in need of cash so we can book rehearsal space, hire costume, props and of course...PEOPLE!

At Nothing To Declare we're keen to support and develop the young talent we work with. A portion of the money we raise from this crowdfund will go to providing cast, directors and writers with useful assets they can take with them on future creative endeavours!

None of this is for profit. We're simply trying to inspire change within the community and allow an important piece of suffragette history to shine once again.

Any and all donations are greatly appreciated! The show will take place on Sat 26 Jan and we could do with all the help we can get in the meantime!

Tickets are available here .
