Story

Last year when I was travelling around India I was fortunate enough to meet Kamish and stay with his family of seven children who live in a community of thirty on the outskirts of a small village called Shiv,100km south of Jailsmere, Rajhastan.

Kamish’s dream is to run a fully sustainable permaculture farm on his land. This is as a result of having been put through a permaculture design course in Jordan by an Australian woman he met while working in Jalismere. Back home in Shiv, he has been spreading his knowledge and looking to educate his local community and farmers about practical organic farming, utilising natural resources and the land around them.

What Kamish lacks is direct access to water and he is currently having to rely on a tractor dropping off a load once a week. This solution is not sustainable in the long run and as a result many local farmers resort to chemical farming due to lack of viable alternatives. As a result of this they accumulate mass debt and also have the expensive need of a tractor to farm the land. This costly process only yields two crops a year as well as having health implications and being detrimental to the local wildlife due their need to deforest the desert land in order to create land flat enough to farm.

With the right access to water, Kamish wants to plant Date, Moringa and Olive trees. plants that have all thrived in such climates. His aim is to demonstrate to other local farmers there is an alternative to chemical farming.

In stage one of Kamish’s project, he built a fully liveable tree house to demonstrate to his community the endless potential of the land they live in. I was fortunate enough to spend a few days living there.

Stage two he is looking to build a bore well which will grant him access to that desperately needed water. This will cost £5000.

Any donation however big or small would be hugely appreciated and would be a massive boost in helping Kamish realise his vision and dream.
