Weʼve raised £500 to set up a community theatre venue and give Hull Playgoers' Society a new home

    What is crowdfunding?

Crowdfunding is a new type of fundraising where you can raise funds for your own personal cause, even if you're not a registered charity.

The page owner is responsible for the distribution of funds raised.

    Story

Hull Playgoers' Society is the oldest (116 years) dramatic group in Hull, and recently assisted in the Beverley Gate reenactment.

They are applying to become a charity, but it's not a quick and simple process.

Over the years they have been self supporting themselves, whilst at the same time raising thousands of pounds towards local charities.

but they are now in danger of closing, which would be a real shame if this happened during City of Culture 2017

With a reduced rent from the City Council we are in the position to create a community theatre venue using a dissued social hall, where we hope people (young and old) will come in to learn new skills, build their confidence, and put on shows that everyone can afford to see.

We also plan to hold afternoon sessions where local writers will have the opportunity to perform their work including spoken word, prose, song and drama , while the audience are enjoying a cup of tea and slice of cake. Whilst at the same time give Playgoers' a home.

But unfortunately, due to the Society having to move 3 times in 2 years, they have drastically depleated their reserves, so we are looking for an injection of cash to enable us to get the venue up and running as quickly as possible.

Amonst various repairs, cleaning, painting etc, we also have anumber of windows to replace and the heating to get up and running, all of which carry a large price tag.

We are all volunteers working on this, so be assured all of the money we can raise will go into the project.

Everyone that helps will (with their permission) have their name on our wall of thanks within the building.

Big or small. your donation will be gratefully received, and you will be most welcome to come and visit us when we are open for a cup of tea and a look around.

If you know someone who would like to help us, please pass on this page to them.

    Many thanks

So it's time for an update. We've done a huge amount of painting, but we still have electrics to sort out, and we'll soon find out if the heating boiler can be repaired or needs to be replaced. Sadly until the electrics are sorted we cannot allow the public into the building, so despite having a stage, we are unable to put on a show to raise the additional funds we require to get the building fully operational and start work on our community projects. So please throw a few pennies in our direction and help us get up and running

After a great meeting with Nick Howbridge (property services) at the Guildhall yesterday, we are now very close to moving into our new building. The hold up has been a recent electrical survey highlighting issues that need addressing before we can move in. So we'll soon be in scrubbing floors, painting walls, cleaning the loos :( ready for an opening party, then we can start work on our first in-house community production. It also means I can start construction on the set for our October production at Hull Truck.

I'm a firm believer in community theatre and, whilst no longer living locally, feel that groups like this are community assets and should be enjoyed and nurtured in equal measure.
