Story

I am running the Reading Half Marathon on the 18th March to raise money for the Addington Special School After School Club.

The After School Club enables Addington students with learning and physical difficulties to enjoy fun activities with their peers across the age range of the school in a safe environment. This gives them the opportunity to experience social interaction similar to students in mainstream education.

The After School Club provides a valuable social experience to the students who do not have many opportunities to relax and interact with their peers. When in school, they are involved in directed educational activities; and at home, their time is planned by their family. Moreover, the club often enables parents some extra time with siblings who may not have as much attention as the more dependent students who attend our school.

They are currently seeking funding from a number of sources to enable the club to continue into the future, as it provides the students with a unique experience they would not receive elsewhere; they are mixing with peers across the school and supported by play workers who know them well – as all play workers are drawn from the adults within the school. Their search for sources of funding is an active and ongoing project as the After School Club is such a valuable and essential part of the school community.
