Story
Arriva Trains Wales have supported Oakland House in Newport for the past 3 years. Oaklands is a short break house which provides planned overnight short breaks for children and young people with severe disability. The age range is up to 17 years and a safe, nurturing and stimulating environment is provided there.
Oaklands allows the children to spend time with other children with disabilities and for them to access safe areas such as adapted playground equipment that would never be available to them in a public playground and also indoor activities such as specialist light sensory technology. Oaklands also gives parents and carers some short term respite from caring. This allows them to do normal activities that the rest of us may take for granted and also to have 24 hours or so to relax. Some of the children who access Oaklands require support up to 24 hours a day, every day.
Oaklands is a public funded establishment and has seen it's funding reduced in recent years. This has had a direct impact on what the staff try to achieve with the kids who attend there. By supporting us on this ride from Holyhead to Cardiff you will be helping Oaklands to buy equipment that will truly make a difference. Last year Oaklands were able to purchase new televisions for each of the communal rooms and the remainder of the money was put towards building a trampoline for the garden that will be fitted into the ground and suitable for children in wheelchairs to use, as well as the more able bodied. The trampoline and fitting will be around £5000.
Please support us to support Oaklands, Thank you!
