What is crowdfunding?

Crowdfunding is a new type of fundraising where you can raise funds for your own personal cause, even if you're not a registered nonprofit.

Story

**Stop Press** We are so grateful to have met and more than exceeded our original target and thank everyone for all the support we've received so far. The extra funds are much needed to pay our staff and keep the school running through these difficult times which are lasting longer than any one thought, and we've therefore increased our target to £10,000. We still have over 100 miles to pedal and it's likely to be monsoon conditions. Your support is a great encouragement to the riders who pass on their personal thanks for all the help you are giving to the children at Treak.

Treak Community Centre is a Charity based education centre in Cambodia. Its philosophy is to create opportunity not dependency (fishing rod not fish). The centre has 470 pupils and is funded by charitable donations. With Covid-19 shutting down tourist visits to Cambodia, Treak Community Centre’s international donations have dried up. They’ve had to stop face to face teaching since March when the teachers were put on half pay; hardly a living wage. Despite this, teachers produce work for students to do at home and teach online to students who can access smart phones etc. Admin staff are maintaining contact with families and implementing a new database for student information. Face masks and other items for sale are being produced in the sewing centre.
The staff would like to play their part in fundraising and have been training and preparing the inaugural Treak Trek. 11 staff and a support vehicle (moto and trailer!) will cycle 320 kms from Siem Reap to Kep on the coast. In parallel with this Ian Walker is undertaking a 343 mile Trek from his home near Devizes to Lands End.
Please donate to support the riders so Treak Community Centre can continue its work to educate vulnerable children and young people, and safeguard the future of the school.
The challenges of going to school during and after the Khmer Rouge Period means that literacy rates are low. The parents of many of Treak’s students are still struggling. Education is vital if the next generation can become more than just subsistence farmers. Treak is making a difference, opening up real opportunities for children. In addition to educating children, they also s. upport parents and the wider community through their Community Support Programme that creates projects, jobs and income. Their programmes help people to learn new skills and increase the villagers’ confidence and self-worth and begin to help people take control of their own futures.

Everyone at Treak thank you for your friendship and support. Headteacher Dara and the staff are providing work books and activity sheets, on Mondays and Tuesdays with pencils, crayons, paper so students can work from home. Around 60% call each week:they are eager to learn! Parents and community leaders told Dara they greatly value the help that Treak provides. The education ministry prefer schools not to reopen until October/November; Covid-19 will severely cut our income over the next 12 months. Any financial help is much appreciated.
