Crowdfunding is a new type of fundraising where you can raise funds for your own personal cause, even if you're not a registered nonprofit.
The page owner is responsible for the distribution of funds raised.
Funded by charitable donations, Treak Community Centre in Siem Reap, Cambodia provides free education to over 470 children and young people every day. The challenges of going to school during and after the Khmer Rouge Period means that literacy rates are low. The parents of many of Treak’s students are still struggling and education is vital for the future of the community. £10 buys a months education and £120 a years education for a child at Treak.
Treak is making a difference. In addition to educating and opening up real opportunities for children, they also assist parents and the wider community through their Community Support Programme that creates projects, jobs and income. Their programmes help people to learn new skills and increase the villagers’ confidence and self-worth and begin to help people take control of their own futures. Indeed, their overarching philosophy is to create opportunities not dependency.
With Covid-19 shutting down tourist visits to Cambodia, Treak Community Centre’s international donations have dried up. Along with all Cambodian schools, Treak had to stop face to face teaching in March and the teachers have been on half pay ever since; hardly a living wage… Despite this, teachers have been producing workbooks for students to do at home and also developed online lessons for any students who can access smart phones etc. Admin staff maintained contact with families and implemented a new database for student information. Face masks and other items for sale have been produced in the sewing centre.
The school briefly re-opened in November but Covid outbreaks forced it to close again after only a few days.
Treak has been very fortunate, and extremely grateful, for the donations received from supporters over the past few months. These, including the funds from the bike ride, will enable us to run the school (albeit with the staff on half salary) well into 2021. However, we can't see the restrictions on travel being eased much before the middle of 2021 at the earliest, and it will take time for travellers and volunteers to return and support us on the ground.
Please donate so we can pay our staff and safeguard the future of the school through these difficult times, which are lasting longer than anyone thought. Treak Community Centre can then continue its work to educate vulnerable children and young people.

**Stop Press** We are so grateful to have met our target and thank everyone for all the support we've received. The extra funds are much needed to pay our staff and keep the school running through these difficult times, and we've therefore increased our target to £10,000. We still have over 100 miles to pedal and it's likely to be monsoon conditions. Your support is a great encouragement to the riders who pass on their personal thanks for all the help you are giving to the children at Treak.

Everyone at Treak thank you for your friendship and support. Headteacher Dara and the staff are providing work books and activity sheets, on Mondays and Tuesdays with pencils, crayons, paper so students can work from home. Around 60% call each week:they are eager to learn! Parents and community leaders told Dara they greatly value the help that Treak provides. The education ministry prefer schools not to reopen until October/November; Covid-19 will severely cut our income over the next 12 months. Any financial help is much appreciated.

TREAK are doing a wonderful thing in Cambodia.. I'm giving up 4 bottles of wine, which is nothing compared to what they can do. It's a fishing rod!
