    Story

Outside, under blue skies and sunshine, the city of Leeds is celebrating all that is Pride. Drag queens lip sync the hits of the 80's, Nandos wave a rainbow chicken flag, Heather Small asks Lower Briggate what they have done today, and Lower Briggate yells back TO MAKE YOURSELF PROUD.

Make your way into the Corn Exchange, and down into the basement arches. It's cooler, there are beanbags, a small group of people gathered outside the Pockets Theatre pop up space. Inside David and Cassie are preparing to Perform, with a capital P. There is a hidden stage waiting, with untold stories of the city outside. All are welcome.

This spring, Pockets Theatre held residencies at the Lawrence Batley Theatre in Huddersfield and Square Chapel Arts Centre in Halifax with writer and director Stuart Crowther to develop a new play - "if the girls start moving, the boys will join in".

If the girls start moving the boys will join in will premiere in Leeds on the 5th and 6th of August as part of the Leeds Pride Festival. We need to raise as much money as we can to make this event as CHEAP and as ACCESSIBLE as possible. We have already secured funding to hire a sign language interpreter, and we are continuing to raise funds to help us stage this incredible piece of work and subsidise ticket cost.

This show marks fifty years since the partial decriminalisation of homosexuality. It's neither a history lesson, a pride march, a schmaltz fest nor a full on musical. We dance around the bars, pubs, nightclubs and watering holes of queer Leeds, on a quest to form a new peoples LGBTQ+ republic, yet to be named.

This is a show about Yorkshire, about drag queens, about boys that eat their boyfriends, trans women that change history, sunday dinner, our stories, our future, our now.

Pockets Theatre is a community arts and theatre company in Leeds. unpacking the world with pocket sized theatre. We make noise, ask tricky questions, celebrate community, and share untold stories.
