Story
IGC Fashion is a community based fashion label in Kampala, Uganda. IGC (Ibrahim and Godfrey’s Community) are a pair of Ugandan fashion designers Kasoma Ibrahim and Katende Godfrey. Alongside producing their own creative African heritage collections, IGC fashion pride themselves on providing free education, mentorship and inspiration to the local community. Once a month we hold a Fashion Cypher event where we teach street kids about fashion and how to recycle and mend their clothes. We also donate clothes to them all handmade and tailored by IGC fashion.
IGC is inspired by african tradition, heritage and culture always paired with a forward thinking and unique design aesthetic. We tend to look at a garment as a moving, breathing piece of sculptural art, which can be used as a vehicle for communicating and questioning ideas about our culture. We are particularly interested in using bark cloth and other neglected items that can be combined and transformed into a unique garment. As young designers, we find it important to recognise the value of craftsmanship and sustainability and this combination is something we always seek to incorporate into our work.
We have previously taken part in Swahili Fashion Week alongside Bobbins and Seif (2015), Nairobi Fashion Week (2016) and Kampala Fashion Week with SEED show, a US Embassy funded fashion program. Most recently we took part in the Fashion Exposition organised by Miracle Centre Cathedral, Kampala, one of the biggest congregations in Uganda, where we were awarded the Best Fashion Designers Award.
The purpose of this page is to seek funding for our participation in Africa Fashion Week Nigeria 2018. Our proposal requests £1000 (5,000,000 UGX) as a contribution towards the participation and travel expenses for AFWN. We believe it is the perfect platform for IGC to showcase our work and a great opportunity to spread our message in order that we can continue to develop and grow our training program and community work here in Uganda and throughout East Africa.
We look forward to receiving your kind contributions, however small. For images of our work please see our Facebook and Instagram pages under IGC Fashion. For any inquiries, please contact Kasoma Ibrahim (+256770693987), Katende Godfrey (+256750889338) or email igcommunityfashion@gmail.com.
