    Story

Wow! We've done it! Thank you all so much. Words cannot express how grateful we are for every single donation that helped us to get to our target. Any extra donations that come in now will be put into a fund to pay for servicing and maintenance on the chair once we have it, as this will also be a financial burden for Joseph in the future. So it is still very much worth donating if you would like to. Thank you everyone. We are greatly indebted to you all.

We are trying to raise £3,900 to fund a powered wheelchair for Joseph. Joseph has was born very prematurely and sustained brain damage at birth. As a result, he has cerebral palsy, which means he is paralysed and cannot walk or stand and he uses a wheelchair full-time.

Joseph's current wheelchair is a manual chair, supplied by the NHS (see photo above). Somebody has to push the chair manually to move Joseph from one place to another, as he cannot propel the wheelchair himself. The chair is incredibly heavy to push and it is now impossible for most of us to push his chair further than a few metres. Unfortunately, this means that Joseph is unable to go out on trips with his peers at College or at his Respite House, or out for walks with his family, because it is too difficult to push his wheelchair.

With the help of Joseph's physiotherapist at Treloar's College, Joseph has been assessed for a Quickie Salsa powered wheelchair (see video below). This wheelchair is battery powered and can be controlled by Joseph's carer, without them having to push the chair. The chair can run on grass, up and down slopes and curbs and rough ground, so having it will open the world up to Joseph again and enable him to join in with everyday activities with his friends and family.

Of course this comes at a cost! Astonishingly, the NHS will not fund a powered wheelchair for somebody who cannot 'drive' it themselves. So we have no choice but to fund it privately. The full price of the chair is £7,900. We have been fortunate enough to get a grant from Treloar's Independent Mobility Trust for £4,000. So we now need to raise the remaining amount so that we can purchase the chair.

Any donation would be very gratefully received. You'd be helping a young man who has already been through so much and deserves to be able to live his life to the full, without limitations. Thank you so much!
