Story

Ingrid and Russell (both aged 45) are childhood sweethearts that attended the Royal Albert & Alexandra boarding school, Reigate, Surrey. They have been together for 15 years, married 14 years & they admit that that they are each others best friends and soul mates. They have 2 teenage sons and 2 dogs.

Ingrid is a retired nurse, she trained at St Mary's Hospital, Paddington and her nursing career gave her the experience of working in Palliative, Respiratory and general medicine, as well as many other areas of nursing. last 9 of her nursing years were spent in a Trauma Center - working in main theatre recovery, which she really enjoyed.

Following nursing, Ingrid continued her love for nursing and combined it with education and trained to become a teacher in Further & Adult education. Ingrid embraced teaching with passion and her students achieved their career dreams.

Moving to the Isle of Wight gave Ingrid a totally new and exciting challenge, setting up and successfully running 'Wightfutures' a charity to help people with mental heath and/or addiction to return to education, training or employment. After 4 years and awards won, Ingrid's health deteriorated and the charity had to close.

Ingrid has a diagnosis of Fibromyalgeia (stage 6) a condition that means she is in severe pain all day every day, she gets tierd easily, sleep is a challenge, her mobility is very much reduced as is her independence and she also has Complicated Asthma Syndrome & COPD which affects her lungs. Ingrid is prone to chest infections, pneumonia, respiratory arrests and hospital admissions. Ingrid's life is radically changed by having 2 chronic conditions that will deteriorate in time.

Russell is Ingrid's main carer. He has had a varied career training as a Chef, cooking for Princess Anne, cooking all over the country and a 2 year stint in Jamaica to name but a few, achieving the position of Head Chef. Russell was training for the Army & then an accident put stop to his planned career. Russ has lived and worked in Jamaica and has always embraced change and challenge. Russ is a retired abseiling Window Cleaner, completing any work at height required. He then took the leap to start his own Window cleaning company, it was very successful, he trained people to work with the Window cleaning system, employed 3 people and the company kept going until the move to the Isle of Wight.

Russ then went back to working in catering in a seaside cafe following a heart attack & nine stents at the age of 39. He returned to work at a Christian Residential center, first as a duty manager and then a few years later he became the Head chef & kitchen manager. Due to severe arthritis and injury in both hands and arms Russ began finding his job a challenge physically. He was also then diagnosed with a severely damaged and arthritic back and advised that work currently is not a possibility for the foreseeable future.

Both Ingrid and Russell are now registered disabled Ingrid requires a wheelchair when going any where. Russ has a stick or he uses an electric scooter. The council have recently installed an adapted bathroom to help them both and a stair lift to aid Ingrid and promote independence, to avoid isolation of being stuck upstairs or downstairs.

The last piece of equipment that they both require is an electric adjustable bed. It will help with pain relief, positioning (especially when Ingrid has to be bolt upright when she has an infection or her condition is deteriorating. ) They have researched the beds available and the Dreams bed that they have found suits all their needs. The price includes the assembly of the bed, cover for maintenance and a firm mattress - a mixture of memory foam and springs to aid comfort and bed base. WE are fortunate to get a large reduction due to us both holding a disabled blue badge.

'It would be an amazing feeling to have somewhere to rest, where pain is less and our comfort is our priority.' This bed can be something that provides help but thankfully does not look like a piece of hospital equipment!! Any help towards the cost of this bed would mean so much to us both. We are only young, with conditions that are removing years from our lives, we want to enjoy the time we have and be comfortable too!!
