Story

Ron is 71 years old, born and bred in Birmingham. He moved to Scotland 12 years ago where he met and married my Mum. He did not let the move effect his love of the area he grew up in and has remained a dedicated West Brom fan as he has been for 65 years! Now, when his health allows he enjoys spending time outside in the garden.

He loved his job, but Ron had to take medical retirement at an Engineering company in his early fifties which was devastating for him. The medical retirement was due to a rare type of brain tumour. The condition is inoperable and causes great pain as well as effecting his mobility and cognitive ability. He tries to not let his medical problems effect his sense of humour and endeavours to remain light hearted despite the challenges he lives with every day.

Ron is a caring individual, and always trusts those he meets and looks for the good. When his health was better he spent time volunteering for Samaritians so he could help those in desperate need.

In 2012, Ron suffered from 2 strokes which left him with brain damage. This greatly affected his speech and the use of his right hand. My Mum works hard looking after him as well as working part time.

Recently, he was contacted by an individual telling him an old friend, which he knew from Birmingham days, had died. Ron was a good friend to him, taking care of him when his friend was homeless. He was told his friend left him a substantial inheritance. Finally, Ron thought, his luck was changing. Unfortunately, this turned out to be an elaborate scam and Ron and my Mum were scammed out of their life savings. Over £40,000 has been lost.

The pressure got all too much, and as a result he attempted to take his own life. Fortunately he was not successful.

Ron and my Mum are now looking at financial hardship in a time where they should not be having such issues and instead be enjoying life, not struggling.
