Weʼve raised £90 to help my Mum with accommodation costs when my much younger sister goes to Aintree, Liverpool for life changing/saving surgery.

Funded on Monday, 20th August 2018

    Story

Until January 2014 Mia was like any other girl, and then complications started to set in and 4.5 years later we never could have imagined how her life was to change.

Mia has an illeostomy, a vesicostomy and a hickman line. This is basically because she can‘t poo, wee, eat or drink in the same way as ‘normal’ people.

Throught the journey we have wanted the drs to fix her and make her better, but the truth is they can’t and so Mia has had to accept her new “normal” and the family have adapted to it.

The fact she is inable to eat or drink is really hard, as it’s such a normal and social thing to do. Cyou imagine being able to eat whatever you want one day and then over a period of 6 months you cant eat or drink anything at all, ever..... but now we just want to keep her alive, but also have a quality of life.

In order to have this quality of life, Mia needs surgery to reverse the vesicostomy and do something else. With the vesicostomy she gets so many infections UTI’s, and from this has had sepesis and even sepstic shock and fungal infections in her blood. It is so serious now that we nearly lost her at the start of this year and are in constant fear of the next infection that gets into her blood, having been told that another serious infection would kill her, due to lack of response to antibiotics.

So... that’s where Liverpool comes in. After an awful 4 years, someone finally thinks he can help. So Mia is going for investigative surgery on 5th July, where the best course of action will be decided. It may mean another bag. One for wee, one for poo. Awful to think of. i don‘t know how i would cope with it, but Mia just wants them to get on with it so that she can restart her life. She wants to go to college and her career aim is to do something involving forensics.

Anyway... when she has the lide changing/saving operation she will be there for approx 3 weeks, which is why i would like to try to raise some money, to help towards accommodation, parking and living costs for my mum.

As well as life changing, both positively and negatively, the surgery Mia awaits will be life saving as it will greatly reduce her risk of infections. The infections are becoming increasingly difficult to treat. Not just because antibiotics are less effective, but because they are literally running out of veins to use to administer antibiotics and fluids. Veins should recover after a period of time, but not Mia’s. It’s so scary yet Mia stays so incredibly strong. She’s an amazing young girl and I want her to stick around for, well ever!

Mia went to Liverpool for day surgery so determine the best long term option and ended up with sepsis, caused by an infection that is very hard to treat. Following a month in hospital and nearly the same amount of time without tpn, as well as no fluids for almost a week, she is on her way home. Very weak and poorly, but on the road to recovery and happy to be going home to her own bed. Typical of Mia, something so simple turning into wks/months in hospital. I fear this will happen when she finally goes for that life changing surgery.

Here she is, all makeup done, and smiling. She really does want to live and still wants to do all the things “normal” teenage girls do. She is always saying “when I’m better ... “ Sad truth is that she will never be cured. But we are hopeful that she can establish a new normal that is better and with much less fear than the current one.
