Story

Intermilanguages, the languages football team at the University of Southampton, are playing a Charity Football match against staff to raise money for the Bitola Children's Home.

I am 20 years old and I set up this project in 2014 after going back to the Children's Home in Macedonia, where I lived until I was 3 years old. The Home in Bitola is the only Orphanage in the country for 0-5 year olds but funding has caused the facilities at the home to suffer. The conditions are shocking and are preventing the Children from receiving the proper care they deserve. This project aims to improve the infrastructure at the home and to take steps to make the Home more a more stimulating environment for the 80 children who live there.

Over the past three years, the project has raised thousands of pounds and has seen the Home take some promising steps forwards. In 2015 the project furnished three rooms with new beds and changing tables to replace rusting, metal ones. In 2016, the dangerous, leaking roof was completely rebuilt. In 2017, the non-working, 47 year old fridges were replaced with brand new, industrial grade fridges. Alongside this investment, a team visits the Home every year to renovate rooms and to engage with the children.

Every penny raised by this football match will go directly to the Children's Home. The Director at the Home is keen to improve facilities for the many disabled children at the Home, and I would be keen to try and make that wish a reality. This would be a significant step forwards as it would allow disabled children to receive the specific attention they need, in an environment best suited to them.
