Story
I am a qualified maths teacher in a secondary school and all too often I find pupils are entering secondary education having already decided that they don't enjoy the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) subjects.
STEM careers are expected to grow at double to rate of other occupations creating 142000 jobs between now and 2023. I feel passionate about encouraging young children to develop their skills in these areas as they are often under represented. We know that children learn better through play and according to a new study, most university students studying for degrees in science, technology, engineering or maths make the decision to do so in high school or before. I want to deliver a series of lessons in my local community of Flixton to primary school children which follow a scheme of work involving a range of STEM activities.
In delivering a program to young children, I hope to inspire them to a life-long love of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. In the long term this will encourage our next generation to pursue the careers that will supply our largest growing sector, building good career prospects for them and possibly even inspire the creation of the technology of the future.
