Story
Our aim for this project is to reduce the amount of Gases (voc’s, Co, NOx) and Particulate Matter (PM) present in the air as contributed by the A102, to increase biodiversity in the area and to educate our children at Invicta Primary School.
Green infrastructure is shown to have an extremely positive effect on social behaviour and mental health
The actions planned are in various steps:
A) Create a porous barrier using Hedra helix (one of the best air cleaning plants) on the fence which surrounds the school. Hedera helix is used for it abilities to fix both gases and PM’s. In most cases we can plant directly into the ground. On some areas, planters will have to be used as its not possible to plant into the ground.
B) Evergreen trees wll be planted: Pinus Mugo, Sylvestris & wallichiana. These trees have specifically been chosen for their ability to trap both gases and particulate matter. In addition to cleaning the air the trees will provide a habitat to certain birds.
C) Using native or naturalised planting to create a biodiversity area to teach kids the importance of nature, first hand.
This project is needed because the school is located about 30m from the A102 which leads to the Blackwall Tunnel. Everyday this road has a 2 mile long traffic jam and the normal level of air quality is appromimately 2.5 times worse that the legal limit.
This school teaches from nursery to year 6 and we need and want to protect our childrens lungs.
