Story
The care my Mum received back in July this year from being here words can not justify, it was from her being here that gave her such an amazing fighting spirit for the last 6 weeks of her life. Mum could not praise them enough for all the staff who cared for her and had a huge chocolate cake made and delivered to them when she was discharged to go home to say thank you, The staff here really are walking Angels and could not have made Mum more comfortable and happy, I would visit Mum regulary here showing her clothes that I had bought for her upcoming Granddaughter, telling her stories of work and updates on our house sale and she was always up out of her bed either having a manicure done, reading a book, gossiping with her neighbours, or eyeing up the Alcohol Cart that came round daily!!! I won't babble on any further but I know Mum would love for any donations to be sent here. I have provided a segment from their web page so you know where the money goes, thank you for taking the time to read xxx
The way ahead
As a result of the amazing donations we receive from relatives and friends of patients who have become part of the PBL family, we are able to meet the many requests for funds. These include ambulances or taxis for patients who need to go home quickly as time is so precious and often short, refreshments and newspapers for the coffee bar and stocking the wonderful Drinks Trolley. Last year we spent £130.00 and we plan to increase that this year. In addition we have set aside funds for any refurbishment of PBL as well as for a complete new hospice in the future.
Today
We are a small group who meet monthly to consider requests for funding, keep up to date with what’s happening, review our financial situation and to plan for the future.
We make grants to supplement the ever tighter funding from the NHS. This enables the patients and their relatives to have additional benefits such as special equipment or assisted study for the staff.
How we started
In 1975 a group of far sighted people met to explore the possibility of establishing a hospice in Norwich. Inspired by the work of Dame Cicily Saunders at St Christopher’s Hospice in South London, they wanted the same quality of care to be available in Norfolk.
An appeal, launched in 1977 raised £250,000. The Cancer Macmillan Fund underwrote the cost of the building and the Area Health Authority provided the site. There was a quick and generous response from the people of Norfolk. The Duchess of Kent officially opened Priscilla Bacon Lodge in October 1979.
Basil Robarts chaired the appeal and Priscilla, Lady Bacon became its President. Some members of the original committee continued to form the Priscilla Bacon Support Group today.
