Story

Help the Friends of Iris Brickfield Park build a new boardwalk for the pond!

Iris Brickfield Park is a little haven in a busy residential area close to the heart of Newcastle. The pond area is thriving with wildlife, the Friends of Iris Brickfield Park want to restore the access to the pond by reinstating the boardwalk and viewing platform that was sadly vandalised in an arson attack. Building the boardwalk from steel will prevent it from being damaged again in the future and it will allow local residents, young and old, access to this beautiful natural world. Currently the pond is not accessible to people who are frail, elderly, have mobility problems etc. the pond is a great resource and we want this funding to ensure access to all members of the community. Local resident Claire stated:

When I was feeling down or I had a difficult day I would walk down the boardwalk and watch the birds playing in the pond and it always lifted my mood, that was taken away when vandals destroyed the boardwalk beyond repair. We need to pull together as a community to restore this beautiful area"

The Friends of Iris Brickfield have been working hard completing funding bids and putting on raffles and events. We have almost reached our target and just need to raise another £1000 to make this project a success. The new boardwalk will allow children to carry out pond dipping, educating them about the ecosystem. People with disabilities will also be able to access the pond again, including Bernise, who suffers with depression and her elderly mother Jayne:

My mam is in a wheelchair now, it is hard going places, the park is accessible but we can't get anywhere near the pond anymore. Mam would love to see the water and it helps me to be mindful and calm."

As you can see from this image the boardwalk was completely destroyed. Help us by giving whatever you can to re-build this beautiful and essential structure.
