    Story

On the 15th July 2018 I will be attempting to complete the Ironman Bolton triathlon. Completing the Ironman Bolton challenge involves swimming 2.4 miles, cycling 112 miles (including 1900m of climbing), and then running 26.2 miles with all three elements completed within 17 hours to be called an Ironman!

This is a massive challenge so I thought it would be good to raise some money along the way for the Meals&More programme run by Brakes and its partners to tackle child holiday hunger..

    A little bit about Meals&More

According to latest figures from the Child Poverty Action Group, over 4m children in the UK are living in poverty. That children should still be going hungry in the 21st century, and in one of the richest countries on the planet, is nothing short of outrageous.

Brakes aims to alleviate holiday hunger for these children in the most deprived areas of the UK - facilitating holiday provision clubs through funding and partnership with local providers.

Meals & More tackles holiday hunger and social isolation suffered by children who have access to free school meals during term time, but for whom there is no sponsored food provision during school holidays. We support children with nutritious food, activities and a safe environment for children aged 2-18 to attend, in areas of most need.

Working with delivery partners (the charitable organisations on the ground who run these clubs) and supplier supporters, who help fund the clubs and offer in-kind support like free stock and cooking classes.

The programme has been operational for two and a half years and has gained significant momentum and support, quadrupling in size in just a year from 2016, feeding over 9,000 children and providing over 100,000 meals through 154 clubs during 2017. We are ahead of target in terms of number of clubs, and well on the way to our overall goal of reaching 25,000 children.
