Story

What is the World Scout Jamboree?

The 25th World Scout Jamboree is an educational event that brings together 40,000 of the world’s young people to promote peace and mutual understanding and to develop leadership and life skills. It is an official educational event of the World Organization of the Scout Movement (WOSM) designed for young people aged 14 to 17. It happens just once every 4 years and in 2023 it will take place in SaeManGeum, Jeollabuk-do, South Korea!

One of the key elements of this Jamboree will be Sustainability, as well as Adventure, Culture & Tradition and Scouting for Life. There will be a huge range of physical, social and cultural activities taking place on one 10km square site. The theme is "Draw your Dream", representing our willingness to accept young people's ideas and opinions, and create an opportunity for them to make their Jamboree dreams come true.

That's great, but what will you achieve?

I want to go to the Jamboree as it will be an amazing opportunity to speak with other young people and hear their ideas about what we can do about the climate crisis. I recently got my Gold Scout Award and I chose to do lots of environmental activities like eating vegan, litter-picking and only buying clothes from charity shops. I know that long plane journeys are one of the worst polluters so my family and I are trying hard to minimise our carbon footprint (things like not eating meat, using electricity for our car, walking as much as we can, buying second hand) to offset the flight to Korea.

And how will that help others?

I am in Explorers and also in the Scouts Young Leaders programme which includes me volunteering at Cubs every week. So when I come back I would share what I've learned with those groups and think of ways we can help save our planet. I also just want to get outside with thousands of teenagers from nearly every country in the world and say 'See, teenagers can achieve things, not just look at a screen!'
