Isla’s Story - Help us give Isla the chance to see her world clearly 🩷
Our beautiful daughter Isla was born on 10th May 2025, and from the moment she arrived, she brought so much love and happiness into our lives.
But within just a few days, we knew something wasn’t right. Isla couldn’t properly open her eyes. While other babies began to explore the world around them, Isla couldn’t. As parents, it was heartbreaking to watch and not know why.
After numerous appointments with our amazing GPs, the Glasgow Children’s Hospital ophthalmology team and genetic specialists, Isla was diagnosed at 8 months old with a rare genetic condition called BPES.
BPES (Blepharophimosis Ptosis Epicanthus Inversus Syndrome) affects the development and function of the eyelids. In Isla’s case, her eyelids are unable to open fully and are physically restricting her vision. This means she cannot see the world clearly, and during this critical stage of her development, her brain is not receiving the visual input it needs. Without specialist surgery, this could have a lasting impact on her sight and how her vision develops as she grows.
We have had appointments with the world’s leading surgeon for Isla’s condition who is based in Spain. After discussions with him and his team, he has advised Isla’s surgery is performed this summer to protect her sight. So on Sunday 5th July, we fly to Malaga for a week for Isla’s Ptosis, Epicanthus and Telecanthus surgery.
We want to give Isla the very best chance, treatment from the most experienced hands, with the hope that she may only need one surgery in her life instead of facing the possibility of numerous surgeries as she grows up. Our daughter deserves the very best opportunity for her future.
Since her diagnosis, we have lived with an agonising wait, knowing she needs help but feeling powerless while time matters so much for her sight.
Despite everything, Isla is the happiest, strongest little girl. She smiles constantly, adores her two big brothers, and fills our home with so much joy. After such a tough start to life, we only hope that life will be gentler for Isla from here on in.
That’s why we, alongside 40 incredible friends and family members, are taking part in the Kiltwalk to raise funds to contribute towards Isla’s surgery and specialist care.
Every donation brings Isla one step closer to the chance to see clearly, grow confidently, and live the life she deserves.
Thank you for helping us give our daughter the brightest possible future ⭐
