Story
Isla was due to take part in the mini great north run in September, after it was cancelled Isla has decided to do the run herself along with her dog Duke.
Islas chosen charity for the run is PawsUp Uk- The Durham Retired Police Dog’s Benevolent Fund.
All the dogs, upon retiring, are either kept by their handler or are kindly re homed. This is normally at about the age of 8 -10 years. Until the point the dogs retire all costs are borne by the serving dog's constabulary.
Historically, there has been no provision to assist with the day to day costs of looking after police dogs after they retire. It is the responsibility of the dogs handler or new owner to cover general costs and often considerable vets bills etc.
PawsUP’s vision is to establish the benevolent fund to be financially stable enough to be able to help with the costs associated expenses of re-homing an older dog, for example- insurance, food, toys, bedding,micro-chip transfer, neutering, etc. And ultimately, a source of funding to assist with future, necessary veterinary treatment if required.
Paws up Uk provides financial support to those who re-home these brave animals that have dedicated their working life to protecting and serving others to enable them to have a long and happy retirement and put their “PawsUp”.
''Our Police dogs provide a tremendous service to our communities for the best part of their working lives and we want to help provide the best possible life for them for their retirement.''- PawsUP.
