Story
I am undertaking a continuous circumnavigation of the Isle of Islay by sea kayak, leaving and finishing at Bowmore which is around 135km and is expected to take in the region of 25 - 30 hours.
The aim is to provide more public access to defibrillators on Islay along with support packages for replacement batteries, shock pads, housing units and training equipment including manikins.
These additional units will be mapped by the Scottish Ambulance Service and in the event of someone calling for help, they will be directed to the nearest unit.
In a cardiac arrest situation, if CPR is started early and a defibrillator is on scene within the first 5 minutes the chance of survival can increase from 6% to 74%. Due to the geography of Islay, it is important that we obtain more units for the Island and to give everyone the best chance of survival from a cardiac arrest, as this condition does not discriminate against one group and none of us are immune.
Due to poor weather the dates selected so far have had to be postponed until we have a better weather window. I will update this as soon as another date has been confirmed. Due to work commitments it is making it difficult now to find a window, I have taken annual leave in September hoping it can take place, fingers crossed that we have good weather.

7 years agoDue to the unsettled weather the challenge has not taken place this year, I am looking to undertake it in 2018 in late spring. I sincerely thank all who have supported the challenge so far we have raised around £2500.00 and still have a whisky auction to take place. The money raised on just given was £970.00 but a 5% management fee has to be deducted for their services given the total £921.50. The page has now closed as it can only remain active for 3 months, I will re-open the page nearer the time when we think the challenge can take place.

7 years agoThe weather has not settled and as yet I am still unable to take on the challenge, I have more annual leave booked for October, this will be the last realistic chance of completing it this year. I will consider undertaking the challenge if there is a settled period and a support boat to cover the more hazardous locations giving the amount of paddling that will be taking place during the hours of darkness. Thanks again to all who has supported this cause so far. Joe
