In December I will be travelling to Athens to spend 3 weeks volunteering at the Orange House refugee shelter which houses unaccompanied minors and single mothers who have had to flee their own homes.
From 10am to 8pm daily, the shelter is open to any refugees who wish to use the facilities at the Orange House (e.g. take a shower, use a computer, wifi etc), or take educational classes which are led by volunteers.
Classes range from learning English, Greek, Arabic, German and Spanish to taking activity based classes (e.g. stitching/sewing, yoga etc).
The shelter is run by an NGO called Zaatar which believes in empowering refugees who have had to flee their own homes and countries due to conflict, by teaching them skills which will help them better their future prospects.
I am raising funds to buy winter clothing, hygiene products (e.g. toothbrushes/toothpaste, soap, deodorant), food and stationary and any other supplies which are needed, to distribute at the shelter, as well as materials and beads which the residents can use to stitch pieces they can sell for their own personal income.
