Story

I'm raising £1,500 for a WW2 memorial- During the Norwegian rescue from occupied Soroya Island back to Neilston Scotland -The winter storm destroyed the steering gear of the The American liberty Ship SS Henry Bacon,This ship had 19 Norwegian refugees from Soroya onboard heading for Scotland.

The SS Bacon fell back from the main Arctic convoy, struggling along trying to make it back to the safety in the UK, With its cargo of 19 Norwegians. Eventually the ship was discovered by the German Luftwaffe and despite a brave fight the ship was sunk by a torpedo-bomber on the 23rd Feb 45.

A Brave Sacrifice

With little in the way of serviceable life crafts the American sailors honoured the age old nautical traditions and loaded the 19 Norwegians onto one of the only fully operational lifeboats.

The Americans sent out distress signals and the Navy sent ships back to help rescue the Norwegians from the life boat and the American sailors from the Arctic Sea, Sadly 27 American sailors lost their lives, But the 19 Norwegians , Mainly Women and children were saved and progressed to the WW2 camp in Neilston to see out the war in safety and sanctuary.

2025

We would like commemorate this epic history and replace 5 of SS Bacon memorial trees that have been damaged in the Neilston kingston park, We would like to tidy up the bottom of the 27 trees and plant bulbs and flowers around the bases of the 27 trees we planted a few years ago that commemorate the sacrifice of 27 American mariners who gave places in one of only two serviceable lifeboats on their sinking ship.
