Story
Hello, my name is Jai and I would be grateful if you could make a contribution to my social action project in Kenya as a part of Porridge and Rice. So far, my parents have paid for the £200 registration fee and I have raised approximately £650. I believe that by taking part in this project it will bring benefits to the people sporting the charity and myself both personally and professionally.
I’ve lived the majority of my life in a Western country and have only briefly encountered extreme poverty, this was in India. My aim is to increase my understanding of life in poverty by visiting the slums of Kenya, experiencing the stark contrasts of society in a developing country in comparison to society in the UK. I feel that it is very important to give back to individuals that are less fortunate than myself, therefore, this project will most definitely allow me to do such.
This project also gives me the capability of educating myself on people’s experiences supplying me with a strong source of empathy which I can utilize in networking with new people. I think that by going on this trip it will broaden my knowledge of various world affairs and be able to better appreciate the privileges that I have now. Lastly, I advocate the notion that travel is vital for young people in becoming a well-rounded individual.
Finally, I am seriously considering studying engineering at university, an avenue for me to experience some work in engineering is by going to Kenya and working with Porridge and Rice (charity). There I will be looking at environmental engineering in particular, which would involve looking at alternatives to fossil fuels specifically, using solar panels to aid in keeping and raising chickens. I believe that by taking part it would be a great opportunity to apply moreover transfer the knowledge I have gathered from my lessons in school into a more practical sense that has profound effects on a community.
The charity focusses on projects that are worthwhile for the community. My project encourages people in the community to look at other perspectives or attitudes that they are not used to seeing. As a consequence, people in the region could start to think of great aspirations for themselves. It will also help to challenge sexism in the community and provide equal opportunity to both genders. Porridge and Rice is suffering with a lack of volunteers and are bereft of resources my duty would be to resolve these dilemmas by participating in a range of tasks such as:
• Facilities and Furniture: Here I will be assisting with the maintenance of classrooms by redoing floors or repainting blackboards providing a great learning environment for children.
• Feeding and Nutrition: I will be weeding and harvesting sweet potatoes (providing vitamin A) as well as serving and cooking food for children in schools
• Health and Hygiene: I will be teaching children the importance of washing their hands furthermore making sure water is safe to drink.
These are just 3 of the 7 programmes that Porridge and Rice have created for volunteers to aid the charity .
