Story

I am a mother of 4 beautiful individuals aging between 7 to 25. My children are my passion they mean everything to me, but another passion I have is to help those less fortunate then myself. I am of Jamaican heritage through both parents and have had the privilege of visiting and spending time there since I was a child. One thing that has continued to strike me during my visits to Jamaica, is the level of poverty that you see on a daily basis the disparity in living condition’s between educated and uneducated is plain to see and truly heart-breaking. Especially because I come from the complete opposite.

Over the years I been able to secure a property with a house and land (2 Acres) in the parish of St Catherine’s, where I and my father both of us musicians provide basic music lessons to the local children in the yard. I am looking to expand the coverage of what we provide, by including basic educational literacy in English, Math and Music to not only children but adults alike.

My ask is for you to join me on this journey to make a difference for those that are truly in need of life’s basic necessities.

General Statistics:

Current in Jamaica, the vast majority of adults over the age of 18 are deemed illiterate – in fact the actual percentage of people considered illiterate is currently at 20%. This obviously leaves the Jamaican adult population hugely disadvantaged when it comes to managing their daily lives. Basic life skills are impacted and this affects not only the individual, but also each generation that follows.

The Jamaican government have put steps in place to improve the situation by introducing free education up to secondary level, however any individual over primary school age will not receive this benefit. The situation for the majority of Jamaicans will unfortunately not change and this is where I plan to step in.

The Project

My aim is to start by helping the adult population in my local area obtain a decent level of English and maths skills enabling them to do basic daily activities that we take for granted like, visiting the doctor, making applications for banking or a possible job and even a driving licence. I aim to achieve this through a 2 tier plan.

1st Tier : Charity element: Providing basic literary English and math to the local adults within the community up to KS3, which will bring those who participate up to primary school level.

2nd Tier: Music element: For every charitable cause there needs to be a way to sustain the project and I understand that. So I want to leverage our background in music to provide a music facility which will give lessons, studio recording and rehearsing facilities to those who want to utilise it from the island and overseas at a competitive cost
