    Story

    Adventure Awaits for Southport Scouts

The 24th World Scout Jamboree is being held in West Virginia, USA in July 2019. There will be 45 000 Scouts attending from 200 hundred countries – and five of them will be from Southport!

Hosted by Scouts Canada, Asociación de Scouts de México and Boy Scouts of America the Jamboree will bring together Scouts from across the globe to experience new adventures, new cultures and a different view of global citizenship.

Held every four years the Jamboree is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for the young people who are all aged between 14 and 17. The selection process was tough but Bethany Russell from 62nd Southport Scout Troop in Churchtown, Genevieve Butterworth and Joshua Cox from Griffin Explorer Unit in Marshside and Mackenzie Morgan and Sam O’Malley from 1st Ainsdale Scout Troop demonstrated exceptional skills in both their written application and selection event leading to them being chosen to represent Southport.

The three week camp, on a site spanning 14 000 acres, will be the culmination of an 18-month journey of personal development as the Scouts embark on the adventure of a lifetime. Each participant is working hard to fundraise their £3600 fee – both to cover their own expenses and those of Scouts from Lesser Developed Countries. The enthusiastic five are full of ideas and energy as they work towards their fundraising goal. They have been hosting fun days, selling raffle tickets and manning local events; there are plans for a sponsored mountain climb, a black-tie dinner and bag packing events in the near future.
