    Story

In order to raise vital funds for the ‘Catch The Dream’ project, I will be running 2 ultra marathons. The first one will take place on the 24th November, as I will be participating in The 50k Ultra Trail marathon in Zakreet and then the second one on the 15th December, the 90k ‘Qatar East-to-West Ultra run’. The ‘Qatar East-to-West Ultra run’ is 90 km across the width of Qatar from the eastern to the western coast, crossing the Qatari desert.

As I have visited Sierra Leone a number of times (2013, 2014 and 2018) on a variety of projects, I have experienced firsthand the work that ‘Catch The Dream’ undertakes. The ‘Catch The Dream’ project aims to work in partnership with rural communities in West Africa to develop sustainable agricultural practices, enabling the local people to become self-sufficient. The project also helps people to identify and develop their own skills, empowering them to pursue and establish their livelihoods for the future.

The ‘Catch The Dream’ project is a not for profit organisation that was established in May 2017 to support the recovery of Lungi Village in Sierra Leone. The village was devastated by the Ebola crisis of 2014-2016, with many people facing quarantine and the loss of their farming livelihoods during that period.

The money raised from both runs will allow the project to complete further work and the continued plan to develop the village of Lungi as well as beginning work in 2 new villages. This work includes, new agricultural practices, swamp into rice field transformations, the improvement of the road leading into the village and completion of a culvert, so that in the rainy season the road would still be passable. The ‘Catch The Dream’ project has now expanded into 2 other villages since Lungi to Jolu and Njala. They have been supported with the provision of seeds, tools, grain store, drying floor, most recently they have built a water well, and working on purchasing a rice mill. Some of the money raised will go towards creating a triage first aid room for these villages.

In addition to this, the project is working with women in the village regarding women’s health especially during and after pregnancy. With donations they are able to supply “baby packs” which provides vital help and support the mother through the first 6 months after giving birth and pay for their treatment when in hospital.

The 'Catch The Dream' project believe that by working in partnership with communities like Lungi Village we can help them to overcome long term dependency on aid and create thriving communities that are self-sufficient and can develop in line with their skills and ambitions for the future.

The funds generated from these races will go directly to these areas. 100% of the money raised will be going to the ‘Catch The Dream’ project.

A massive thanks to the businesses that have generously sponsored me.
