Story

We are having a Spring GArden Opening on Sun 6th May 2018 at our House. Please do come & help us fundraise for Women with Disabilities from NW CAmeroon.

Cameroon in west Africa has been facing increasing tension between its English & French speaking populations over recent months, as a result of colonial land and linguistic divisions at Independence. The safety of Human Rights Defenders has been under increasing threat, with attacks on people who speak out publicly.

Ruth Acheinegeh, a disability activist from Bambui has been involved in the struggle for the rights of Women with Disabilities for many years, working with a group campaigning for employment, housing, education and sexual rights, and against domestic violence.

At the same time, whilst based in NW Cameroon, a rich agricultural area, she has run a market stall, supporting both herself and her wider family.

Communication presents many challenges, especially for people using wheelchairs or with mobility difficulties, as the terrain is hilly and roads becomes impassable in the rainy season. Buildings are also difficult to negotiate with a lack of accessibility.

Customary practices infringe on women’s rights to inheritance & access to land.

Witchcraft & sorcery are believed to be causes of disability – disability is considered a curse

Local language defines people with a disability as "people not able to do anything; people who look like a fool"

People with Disabilities face Stigmatization; Isolation; Fear; Low self-esteem; Limited opportunities; Limited contributions; Continued poverty; Uneven development.

The NW Association for Women with Disabilities, also Disabled Women Forum NW (Facebook) recognise that women are more impacted by these issues than men. In particular they face VIOLENCE, social, sexual, domestic violence that infringes on many aspects of their lives. The Forum made a video on the struggle for girls with disabilities to receive quality education: FUTURE ASSURED

Ruth was awarded a certificate in recognition of her work promoting the rights of WWD.

Ruth was forced to leaveCameroon for USA for her own safety when she herself faced threats as she continued to campaign against the above issues after the start of the civil war. Now living in USA, she is producing a short video explaining the situation for other WWD and why support is so vital for their survival and safety.
