Story
My name is Jay, I am an Army Diver and work at the Defence Diving School in Portsmouth. In 2022 I was inspired by the Sub Sea to Summit charity fund raising team who successfully ascended Snowdon with a set of 'standard diving equipment'. Having experienced a challenging period and receiving much needed help and support in 2022 I knew I needed to give back and contacted the Historical Diving Society in Gosport (www.the hds.com) to set the wheels in motion on an idea I'd had to raise money for the following causes:
The Earthquake appeal - Devastating earthquakes have killed tens of thousands of people in Turkey and Syria, hundreds of buildings have been destroyed, survivors have faced freezing conditions, persecution and need urgent aid.
The Military Diver Memorial Project (www.militarydivermemorial.com) - An ambitious project to build a long overdue National Memorial of a Standard Diver at the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire to recognise the work undertaken by all Military Divers - Past, Present and Future.
My idea is simple, combine 2 iconic military staples that are relevant to my military career. The '30 miler' (one of the Commando tests) and the Siebe-Gorman Standard Diving Dress (similar to that I'm pictured in, being the iconic old fashioned hard hat diving dress and weighs approximately 80 Kg).
The plan is to get 'hatted up' on 29 March 2023 and set off on a 30 mile route. Its difficult to accurately estimate how long this will take but am aiming for under 24 hours. Less a skeleton RLS (real life support) crew for safety and any calls of nature I don't plan on stopping until 'task complete'.
Any support no matter how small is welcome with ALL funds raised going to support the Earthquake Appeal and Military Diver Memorial Project
Thanks
