Story
I have set up this page as my Christmas present this year, instead of chocolates and socks I would really appreciate it, if you would make a donation to this local charity.
The Friends of hazel and thoroughsale woods consists of Volunteers restoring the ancient woodland in the heart of Corby
Corby's woodland had been neglected for many years. Over the past 5 years groups of volunteers have litter picked and learnt how to coppice the woodland as a part of efforts together with Corby Borough Council to improve the woods in Corby and make them more accessible to all. This is an ongoing project that gives volunteers the opportunities to gain training and new skills in using equipment such as chainsaws, brush cutters, log splitters, as well as first aid and safe working in woodland.
Why the community needs them
The work done so far in the woodland has opened it up to many more people who use the new network of paths as short cuts from one part of the town to another. Areas of woodland that previously would never have been used by Corby people are now well frequented by mothers with children, dog walkers and individuals passing from one part of the town to another. The coppicing has also improved the amenity value of the woods by allowing flowers such as bluebells, wood anemones, and primroses to bloom.
Their impact on the community
Currently there are about 25 volunteers who work on the project, these include people who are unemployed looking to gain skills for work, people recovering from mental illness, and people with learning difficulties. They also have groups of young people with disabilities from Corby Business Academy as well as similar groups from Tresham College who come to learn practical skills. They have recently opened a shop at East Carlton with a view to sell products produced from Corby's woodland.
Keep the woods for future generations to enoy and relax in.
