Story
Help Jemma Get The URGENT Neurosurgery She Desperately Needs.
Jemma is a kind, caring 22 year old who has a rare genetic condition called Ehlers Danlos syndrome, a connective tissue disease that causes her joint issues and dislocations, Skin problems, Neurological problems, POTS,digestive problems and more..
Why does she need Surgery?
After years of neck pain , head pain and pressure, progressive neurological symptoms and two stroke like episodes seeing loads of drs we still had no answers as to whats causing it. She contacted a support group who advised her to get an upright MRI and send it for a review by a specialist neurosurgeon in Barcelona.
On the 22 march she had the scans and sent them straight to the specialist and we finally had answers ! He diagnosed her with Atlantoaxial instability(AAI), Craniocervical instability(CCI), 12mm bilateral Cerebellar tonsil ectopia(chiari), He wanted to do further tests because there was evidence of instability further down her neck. on the 10th July she had scans and X-rays in Barcelona then met with The specialist Neurosurgeon later on that day. He confirmed that she does have Subaxial instability as well as the CCI, AAI,Chiari.
The progression of CCI in your images is one of the most advanced I've seen.- Dr Gilete Neurosurgeon.
He is very concerned about the severe instability and related symptoms which will only get worse the longer its left untreated. She needs to have Urgent full Neck fusion which involves fusing from her skull down to T1 using rods and screws and 2 ribs as well as posterior fossa decompression.
her current symptoms indicate that her brain stem is being damaged by the dislocating neck bones. She suffers horrendous neck pain daily, Tremors in her hands and arms, pressure in her head , nausea, Vertigo, she cant sit up for very long before the pain nausea and other symptoms become too much.
With out urgent surgery she is at risk of serious neurological complications that can lead to paralysis or worse if left too long.
We think with out surgery there is no chance of her condition improving and her problems will likely worsen as time goes by. we strongly recommend surgery ASAP! - Dr Gilete.
