Being Deaf or hard of hearing isn't just about not being able to hear. It's isolating, depressing and can contribute to mental health issues in many cases.
If you have always used sign language then you can at least communicate with some other people but probably not all of your family, probably not your gp, dentist, friends or shop assistants.
Many Deaf people have never been on holiday or travelled on a train due to the problems with communication.
