Story
Towards the end of 2017, Jane and I were fortunate to attend a Gospel music & storytelling evening in Newtownbreda featuring award winning Ugandan Gospel artist Levixone. During the concert, Levixone and other members of the group gave poignant and powerful testimony of how their lives were changed by Northern Ireland charity Fields of Life & their partners across Ireland, UK, and in Uganda, by providing free education, health and well-being programs for children and young people. Former pupils are fully engaged in supporting these ongoing projects.
That evening inspired Jane and I to volunteer for the Fields of Life/Fitzroy team trip to Uganda in July 2018, to deliver a health & education program. We must fund raise to cover our costs and the provision of arts & crafts and educational materials.
We appreciate the many demands on people's resources, however we feel this is a particularly worthy program, educating boys and girls on health-related matters, including effective menstrual hygiene and its importance to the health, well-being, dignity, empowerment, mobility and productivity of women and girls. Menstruation is still a taboo subject in many parts of the world, your support in helping us challenge this perception would be greatly appreciated.
Esther, 16, a Ugandan student "Disposable pads are expensive, and when girls didn't know how to make pads they would have to miss school, maybe for three days. In our hygiene club, we have learned how to make sanitary pads, and also teach our friends about menstruation. Now things are changing!”
