    Story

Our friend Padam lost his house during the earthquake in 2015.

Two years on he hasn't yet been able to afford to rebuild his family home. We are hoping to raise £4000 to cover a chunk of the bare essentials involved in the rebuild.

The family - Padam, his wife and two children, and his Mum and Grandma - live in a small temporary hut as do many of their neighbours. Padam works in Kathmandu, but his income working in a bar barely covers living expenses for him and to support his family, making it impossible for him to save the money he needs to provide a safe and sanitary living environment, no matter how hard he works.

Straight after the earthquake we did a bit of fundraising and managed to send about £650 which he spent on mitigating the worst of the crisis for him and his family, and contributing tents and other supplies for the local community, we now want to make a bigger push for him to really improve things.. .

(Padam and his wife with their first child, before the earthquake:)

Padam's situation is not unusual - despite $4.1bn being pledged in international aid, the majority of Nepalese people who were affected by the earthquake still don't have proper housing. Barely 5 percent of the destroyed houses have been rebuilt according to the Nepal National Reconstruction Authority.

Padam was our closest friend while we were in Nepal, and after we left he travelled to England to visit us. We are focusing our campaign on this one family because of the bonds of friendship, and the ongoing connection and warmth that we have maintained with Padam over the 17 years since we spent time with him. Please do contribute whatever you can afford and feel happy giving. We encourage you to do anything additional you feel moved to do to help the situation in Nepal.

A good cause. Shocking that aid is not reaching the people. Good to do what we can in a small way to help Padam. I met him and liked him when he visited Sheffield and wish him and his family well.
