This beautiful 700 year old Oak tree 'Oakley' is currently standing within Maesygwasted Cemetery in Welshpool and sheltering our dearly beloved that are laid to rest there (including my baby daughter 'Poppy'). But sadly it is destined to be felled at short notice this Wednesday (26/10/16) and this group has been created with the intention of raising awareness, support and funds, to purchase the trunk from the contractor and commission a sculptor to create a fitting tribute to be placed back into the cemetery for future generations of the family members of the departed to admire.
Otherwise I have been informed that he is going to be chopped up and sold for firewood!
I have already spoken to the Mayor of Welshpool, Cll John Powell and a representative of Powys County Council, who have all been very helpful and I am due to speak to the contractor tomorrow, who I am hopeful that they will possibly donate the stump? Otherwise we will need to negotiate the cost of purchasing the stump, if possible, from them and to organise the finer details.
But we will need to raise the funds required to cover the overall cost of the project. And please, I am hoping that I am not the only one that cares enough about this tree, to do something to protect its memory?!
