Story

Next July, I'm travelling to fiji to volunteer in a remote rural villages in schools with children aged 3-13. We will be founding kindergartens and helping out at primary schools, teaching reading, writing and comprehension (english is the language of fiji, but most children from small villages only speak fijian at home and so fall quickly behind at high school as it is all taught in english). We'll also be doing sports, arts and crafts, dance, drama, music and debating/public speaking as they don't have the resources to do this normally. the goal is to create a structured kindergarten and a legacy of pe, art and english lessons that can continue after we have left. the project is 3.5 weeks and we stay with a fijian family host. the project cost is £1300 and £400 of that goes directly to the village and so £400 is my fundraising goal (as i have a part-time job and savings to contribute to the rest). I am volunteering through the organisation thinkpacific and so there is a lot more information on the website if you would like to know more. This volunteering trip is hopefully going to help me improve my confidence, resiliance and people skills and allow me to be completely immersed in another culture, so different from my own. This project also has a positive impact on the lives of fijian children, 75% of which are beneath the povety line. Their skills increase greatly and give them a brilliant start in their education. We also teach basic heath skills such as brushing teeth, as many villages don't have the knowledge for this and so children normally brush their teeth with sugar cane.
