Story

Hello, my name is Jess and I am a 3rd year physiotherapy student at University of Plymouth. This upcoming summer will be my last summer before starting my dream job of being a physiotherapist. However, before embarking on this journey I would like to expand on my knowledge of physiotherapy and especially physiotherapy in countries that do not have the funds and resources we all take for granted here in the UK therefore, I have planned a 2 week physiotherapy placement in Ghana in July.

I have set up this page with the aim to raise a portion of the funds towards my trip as because it is not a paid job or volunteering role there is a cost to me working in Ghana. I will be completing my placement with Work The World whom have been organising healthcare placements around the world for the past 10 years. This company employ local people to run programs, buy food and products from local communities and rent accommodation from local landlords. Giving a genuine experience of Ghana whilst also supporting the local community.

I have always had a passion for helping those in need or those less fortunate than us. This has only been highlighted further during my work as a physio assistant and throughout my physiotherapy degree. Physiotherapy is such a great profession and I feel so privileged to be learning the skills to help a range of people with a range of conditions. Sharing this knowledge and empowering individuals though physiotherapy is extremely rewarding and can truly change people's lives.

In relation to being on a placement in Ghana, I am hoping that I can help these individuals that are desperately in need by providing services that will empower individuals and promote independence. I will be working in areas such as neonatal intensive care, obstetrics and gynecology, orthopedics and A&E- just to name a few. Working in these departments will be incredibly valuable and I am confident it will expand and influence my views of health care and physiotherapy- albeit with it's challenges along the way!

Working in a developing country and learning about their health care system and learning about physiotherapy in low-resource environments will develop my skills as a physiotherapist whilst also presenting with quite a challenge. This trip is hugely out of my comfort zone but I believe it will be truly valuable not only for my professional development but my confidence also.

I would be truly grateful if you could donate any amount, big or small, towards my trip to Ghana to help those less fortunate than ourselves.
