Story

Joe has set himself the challenge of cycling the 7081 Miles between UK and Borneo in a bid to raise funds to travel to Borneo as part of a team with Camp International, where he will volunteer in the community including; Habitat Conservation (Batu Puteh), kindergarten development (Bonkud) and water security and kindergarten development (Tinangol). Batu Puteh is an incredible haven for a large majority of Borneo’s wildlife including orangutans, elephants and proboscis monkeys, and is one of the world’s most important natural habitats. However, it’s also one of the most threatened. he will get involved in activities to help safeguard this wildlife paradise for future generations by helping to tackle deforestation. Borneo, is the third largest island in the world, divided between Indonesia, Malaysia and Brunei, was once covered with dense rainforests, but along with its tropical lowland and highland forests, there has been extensive deforestation since the 1960s, as the native economies of the region experienced rapid industrialisation. In the 1980s and 1990s the forests of Borneo underwent a dramatic transition. They were levelled at a rate unparalleled in human history, burned, logged and cleared, and commonly replaced with agricultural land, or palm oil plantations. Half of the annual global tropical timber acquisition currently comes from Borneo. Furthermore, palm oil plantations are rapidly encroaching on the last remnants of primary rainforest. Much of the forest clearance is illegal.Bongkud village has a small kindergarten that uses a small church building. However, the population of young children in the village is growing fast and the current kindergarten is becoming overcrowded. You’ll help by continuing the development of a purpose built kindergarten, providing a stimulating and safe environment where these young children can learn and play. Tinangol and surrounding villages are unable to afford mains controlled water and so they’re solely reliant on pumping fresh water from the valley below and storing it through the year. The local kindergarten also needs refurbishing. He will help by improving the water systems in the village and constructing a play area for the kindergarten. Joe is fully commited to this project and as stated earlier, to assist in raising the money for this great cause he will be cycling the distance between UK and Borneo a grand distance 7081 Miles. This is no mean feet for a young 14 year old boy and to hit his target he will cycle a minimum of 400 miles a month. He will be starting this endevour from the 1 Nov 17. Any donations in helping Joe raise his target for this challenge would be greatly appreciated.
