Story

Rebuilding Sunbury, one roof, one family, one act of kindness at a time...

I’m raising £5,000 to help repair the community church roof and begin to rebuild after the devastation Hurricane Melissa left behind in Sunbury, Clarendon, Jamaica — our family home.

Sunbury is a small, tight-knit farming community where people live off the land — growing crops, tending livestock, and looking out for one another. But on October 28th, Hurricane Melissa tore through with unforgiving force… destroying crops, killing animals, and damaging or flattening homes.

The heart of the village — the church — was also hit hard. Its roof has been ripped apart, leaving the building exposed to the elements. Yet, it’s so much more than just a building. It’s where the community gathers for weddings, christenings, funerals — moments that bind people together through joy and through loss. It’s where our own son was christened.

If we can make that roof watertight again, it would mean more than simply keeping the rain out. It would give people hope… a sign that Sunbury can rise again.

My wife and I will be travelling to Jamaica in a few weeks, carrying supplies to the people who need them most. We’ll be buying water and tinned food in Kingston and bringing them to Sunbury, along with timber and zinc (corrugated metal sheets) to help families rebuild their homes.

My mother-in-law, Mrs Waite, is already on the ground, assessing the damage and helping to coordinate local support, alongside my brother-in-law Tyrone.

We know £5,000 won’t repair everything Hurricane Melissa destroyed — but it will make a real difference. It will help families survive and rebuild with dignity, and remind them that they’re not forgotten.

Every pound counts. Even £1 can buy a bottle of water and a tin of beans.

Your donations will go directly towards:

• Repairs to the church roof — to bring the heart of Sunbury back to life

• Materials to help families patch and rebuild their homes

• Food and water for those who’ve lost everything

Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast, and totally secure. Your details are safe, and every penny goes where it’s needed most.

Thank you — truly — for anything you can give. Every little bit helps… and every act of kindness brings hope back to Sunbury.
