Story

Every year, Cairngorm Mountain Rescue Team are called out to assist people who need their help, whether they are lost, severely or fatally injured. The environment of the Cairngorms is one of the most severe in the UK.

It doesn’t matter the weather or the time of day, when people are in need, the Rescue Team drop everything and go to assist.

Made up of volunteers, no one in the team is paid meaning that a rescue during the night often means that team members get little or no sleep in between shifts at their “day jobs”.

The Rescue Team has always had a big impact on my family. My Grandpa (Alistair McCook) was one of the founding members and also had a stint as Team Leader. Something which later resulted in him receiving an MBE from Buckingham Palace. As a child, I grew up listening to stories of rescues that he and the team had carried out. These rescues were in the days before the rescue helicopters and high-tech satellite navigation equipment. Any search and recovery had to be done by foot. This often makes for slow progress when nightfall, wind, snow and a mountain environment all combine.

The Rescue Team rely entirely on donations, so on 22nd June 2021, I am going to try and complete 100 holes of golf in a day - 5 and a half rounds.

Every penny that you can spare and donate will go a long way in helping the Rescue Team and making sure that those who call for help in the mountains are able to get the assistance they need.
