Sculptures dedicated to war dead destroyed

Irreplaceable sculptures have been destroyed in a suspected arson attack on a moorland chapel built as a memorial to aspiring artists killed in the Second World War

"...the blaze took hold in the annex attached to John Bunting's Chapel....at Scotch Corner above the village of Oldstead near Sutton Bank on the North York Moors. Wooden sculptures stored in the building were destroyed."

Restoration in progress...

"The chapel was created [out of the ruins of an old farmstead on the site] by sculptor John Bunting as a labour of love and memorial to pupils at Ampleforth College where he studied and later taught." says Janet Gleeson in the Darlington & Stockton Times & Northern Echo.

Bernard, John Bunting's eldest son who cares for and maintains the chapel for the benefit and enjoyment of the family and the many walkers and visitors to the Open Days. Bernard said "Why would anyone carry out such a meaningless and mindless attack? We are thankful that the chapel itself remains undamaged but very sad at the loss of some of his works in wood that were stored in the building"
