Story

My husband, John, is 48 years old and he has stomach cancer. His journey has not been a smooth one with multiple hospital admissions. Unfortunately we have recently been given the devastating news that the chemotherapy has not worked. As he has had a major reaction (heart attack and stroke) to the 2 types of chemotherapy available for gastric cancer the NHS are unable to offer any further treatment.

We were told that there was 1 other treatment that could be explored - immunotherapy using the drug Nivolumab, which is not currently available on the NHS but is the first line treatment in Canada and America.

John's oncologist did appeal to the local health board asking for special consideration for the drug to be given to John by the NHS, unfortunately this was not approved due to the drug not being licensed yet in the UK for gastric cancer.

The drug is available privately. This is now our only option to help give John more time at home with me and our two young sons.

The cost for treatment is £5,600 per cycle, which is every two weeks. This is not including the cost of doctors visits. As a family we have managed to raise around half of the £33,600 needed to provide John with the initial 3 months of treatments, we urgently need help to fund the rest.

Any support you could provide would mean the world to our family.

We would also like to take this opportunity to thank all of the NHS staff, particularly those at the Beatson, who have taken the best possible care of John since his diagnosis, and who also wish for him to receive this treatment.
