Story

All too often in a business we can be guilty of working with tunnel vision to meet the targets or goals we have to achieve. At John Roe Toyota, Hull we have decided to stop, and take a moment to have a look at the community we work in and realise the work of organisations that are helping people in our local area.

5 Senses are one such organisation and I had the privilege of meeting the team on 30th April to see some of the work they carry out to help others. I have to say that I felt ashamed that this fantastic work was going on literally 5 miles down the road from our dealership and I was completely unaware of the work they do so if you have a spare 5 mins then let me tell you a bit about who they are and how they make such a massive impact on so many lives in the community of Hull.

The 5 Senses Expressive Arts and Education Centre for Vulnerable Adults was originally formed in 2004 as a service for the local charity Avocet Trust. However due to its continued success the 5 Senses became an independent charity in 2010.

The charity welcomes vulnerable adults over the age of 18 who live in the Hull, East Riding and surrounding areas and cater for students who have a mild or severe learning disability, autism spectrum disorder, profound physical disabilities and people who need help managing their challenging or self- injurious behaviour.

5 Senses provide exceptional learning and development opportunities for vulnerable adults with physical and developmental disabilities, through the use of centre based educational sessions and community activities

Activities cover a number of subjects, from Geography through to Life Skills. Each session is designed to develop the students learning capabilities by using teaching methods derived from differing forms of Expressive Arts, using Music, Art, Dance and Drama as tools to enhance each individuals development in a wealth of subjects, which means that sessions can be tailored to cover everyone’s learning styles.

In order to raise awareness of this organisation and to try and provide additional financial support to their charity Myself, Chris and Sally will be walking the gruelling Yorkshire 3 peaks 24 mile challenge and are aiming to complete it in under 10 hours. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE Help us towards our goal of £1000 by supporting 5 Senses and our Yorkshire 3 Peaks Challenge Journey and please visit the 5 Senses website to see some of the amazing work they do.
