Story
I am looking to raise money for the Metropolitan Police Benevolent fund. This charity looks after serving and retired police officers families if the worst should happen. Police officers often get over looked when it comes to charities and support from the public when on occasion some of them pay the ultimate price.
Why the benevolent fund?
The Benevolent fund is one close to my heart as my father had served in the West Mids police from 1959-1992 and after two years of retirement died suddenly in a garden accident. The tragic accident happened on a sunny bank holiday Monday in August 1994 where he was knocked out of tree by a falling branch. He died instantly but unfortunately in front of me, my ten year old brother, mother and most of the neighbours. Now whilst you never really come to terms with such a sudden loss of a loved one, life still goes on and it was the West Mids Benevolent Fund that stepped in to help my family financially, taking one less worry away from my mother.
What am I doing?
I am going to attempt to walk the West Highland Way on my own carrying all required kit. The way is an old military route stretching 96 miles from Milngavie just north of Glasgow to Fort William at the foot of Ben Nevis. My plan is to do this over five days. I will driving up on the first day taking about 8hrs then cover 12 miles. Over the remaining four days I will cover about 20 miles each day with a total ascent of 3900 meters and a pack of 19kg. I will be camping/wild camping as I go and after reaching Fort William on the 6th day I will then climb Ben Nevis. I will just add I failed to complete this route on the same time scale when I was 22 so it is going to be a substantial challenge.
When am I doing it?
